Chapter 50

'I want to get married.'

There was pin drop silence following his statement. Even the workers who had only been hired to decorate the house for the wedding seemed to recognise the gravity of the situation. All work had halted and all eyes turned to Arnav.

Mamiji recovered first but only so far as to exclaim 'hello, hi, bye bye. What iz this Arnav bitwa?'

The rest of the family wisely remained silent as Anjali, the inevitable tears blurring her vision stood up and cupped her brother's cheek in one hand.

'Really Chotte?'

Arnav nodded stiffly, uncomfortable with making his sister cry, even if there was a higher purpose and they were happy tears.

Anjali was not completely blind to the small changes that Arnav's character had gone through in the past few months and she shot Naniji a conspiratorial look before asking. 'Khushiji...'

'Yes. She can help you look.' Arnav interrupted quickly ignoring Dhruv's knowing look and raised eyebrows. 'I want it arranged quickly though. Just think Lavanya but less... less clingy.'

Anjali's tears started again as she watched him stride away. She wasn't exaggerating when she said she knew her brother inside and out and she hadn't missed the gleam in his eye when he suggested Khushi as her accomplice in finding him a bride. Her brother was up to something sneaky, but as long as it ended with him married and happy (hopefully with Khushiji) she wasn't about to derail the plan.

She had dreamed about this day. Thought it had finally come true when he brought Lavanya home only to have her hopes dashed. Now it seemed that her baby brother had actually truly grown up and if she was honest her tears were more for herself than him. The scars left on her heart by Shyam seemed to burn and rage.

Where was the justice in her younger brother finding true love and happiness while life dealt her with one unfaithful lover after another? She shook her head and brushed away the tears then rushed over to Nani; eager to share with her confidante her suspicions and set the wheels in motion.

'WHAT?!'

Anjali smirked but kept her tone neutral. 'Yes Khushiji, it's finally time to fulfil your promise of helping Nani and I to find a bride for Chotte. He says that Akash's wedding has made him realise he does want to get married. Could you come over please? I know you must be busy with the mehndi arrangements but please just for a while! I've already sent the car over. You know Chotte, he wants it done quickly and with no fuss.'

'I'll give him no fuss,' Khushi muttered as she ended the call and began searching for her shoes. She gave Payal a quick hug and a kiss, promising to be back soon, did the same with her father and then ran out of the house, weaving skilfully through the hordes of helpful and nosey neighbours that currently seemed to litter their house at all times.
