Chapter 43

Khushi pick up the phone, we need to talk.

You’re being ridiculous now.

I apologised to Dhruv.

Please call me.

Khushi stop acting like a child and answer your damn phone!

‘Bhai, are you busy?’

Arnav sighed and threw his phone onto his desk before indicating that Akash should come in. ‘Everything okay Akash?’

‘Actually Bhai I need to... I need to ask a favour. I need you to talk to Mom for me.’

Arnav raised an eyebrow, ‘about?’

He kept his face impassive despite his surprise at Akash’s news and waited until there was a natural pause in the conversation. ‘Does Khushi know? About you and Payal?’

‘No I mean yes erm... Payalji told her last night.’

Arnav was pleased to find that Khushi hadn’t been keeping secrets from him. ‘Okay Akash, I’ll sort it out with Mamiji. Don’t worry.’

‘Thank you so much Bhai, you don’t know how much this means to me.’

Arnav watched Akash leave the office and smirked to himself as he picked his phone up again.

Khushi, we need to talk about Payal and Akash. Mamiji isn’t agreeing.

He barely had time to put his phone back on the desk before it started ringing.

‘What’s wrong? What did Mamiji say? Hai Devi Maiyya, Jiji will be so upset!’

‘Khushi, Khushi calm down! Look, I’ll come to pick you up after work and we can talk about what to do.’ Without giving her a chance to reply he ended the call and promptly turned his phone off. Knowing Khushi, she would probably take any chance to worm her way out of meeting him in person so he called both his assistant and Lavanya to tell them he didn’t want to be disturbed by any phone calls for the rest of the day.

‘What’s wrong with you?’

Khushi attempted a smile as she shot another worrying glance at the clock, ‘nothing’s wrong.’ She had tried to call Arnav numerous times over the afternoon hoping to cancel or at least rearrange their meeting this evening for a time when she could make Payal and Akash attend also but failed every time.

Abhi grinned, ‘oh I see. Loverboy picking you up after work is he? You can go early if you want, I don’t mind.’

Khushi shook her head and went back to her typing only half listening to Abhi talk. After listening to Payal last night and again she found herself confused. She wasn’t sure how to explain what she was feeling, and knew that Arnav would demand precisely that from her when they met. She didn’t regret the time she had spent with Arnav at all but learning about Payal and Akash’s marriage plans made her own undefined relationship with Arnav seem so futile and not worth the amount of effort it always seemed to require.

‘Khushi!’

Khushi snapped out of her reverie at Abhi’s shouting. ‘Huh, what?’

Abhi picked her phone up from the desk and waved it in front of her face, ‘your phone is ringing. I think Arnav’s downstairs.’

‘Oh right. I’ll just... thanks.’ She took the phone from his hand just as it stopped ringing and began to gather her things together. ‘See you tomorrow?’

Abhi nodded and waved but she could see the concern etched on his face as he watched her leave.
