FF: It's Not Right - Chapter 46

Chapter 46

Arnav caught up with Khushi just as she reached out to open the car door and put his own hands out either side of her and effectively trapping her between himself and the car. Khushi’s face fell and she turned around indignantly planning to demand an explanation but instead found herself shrinking back towards the car as Arnav loomed over her.

‘Why did you leave the cafe so quickly? We haven’t finished talking.’

Khushi attempted a nonchalant shrug but had to abandon it halfway as Arnav stepped closer towards her. ‘What was there left to say? I told you my plan for Mamiji and then you ignored it completely and decided you would deal with herself.’

Arnav stepped back slightly in order to scoff appropriately. ‘Jodiyan upar banke aate hain. Kuch kuch hota hai Mamiji, aap nahi samjhenge. Really? What crap. If you think that would work on Mamiji you really don’t know her at all Khushi. Besides you know that’s not what I mean.’

‘I... I have no idea what you’re talking about. Now could we please go? Amma and Babuji will be wondering where I am.’

‘No. But can we please rewind to earlier in the day when I told you something I’ve never said to anybody before and you have yet to respond?’

Arnav had attempted to shift the conversation from Akash and Payal numerous times in the past hour until Khushi’s attempts at evasion had turned almost comical. This time there was no humour, Khushi simply looked at him in defiance.

‘Mr Arnav Singh Raizada! If you don’t drive me home right now I’ll... I’ll scream! Yes, I’ll scream and passersby will stop and I’ll... I’ll tell them you’re harassing me.’

Arnav shrugged and smirked, ‘You’re going to scream and let strangers know I love you and want you to reciprocate? Is that an empty threat or a promise?’

‘No! I... I’ll... I’ll do it. D... don’t think I won’t!’ Khushi poked him in the chest with one finger which he promptly caught in his hand.

Arnav slid his hand around the rest of Khushi’s hand and pulled it towards his chest, stroking his thumb lightly across the back and leaned forward resting his forehead lightly against hers. ‘Go on Khushi, say it.’ Arnav’s voice came out low and thick with emotion. He felt vulnerable, having for the first time exposed himself to rejection in a relationship. He would give himself good odds on his feelings being reciprocated by Khushi but he needed the confirmation of her saying the words out loud.

Instead of another put-down or diversion tactic Khushi lowered her eyes and shook her head softly and Arnav could see the blush creeping up on her cheeks. Arnav felt a sudden urge to gather her up in his arms and steal her away from the rest of the world. Deciding not to trouble her any further that evening he bent his head and kissed her softly on one of her now scarlet cheeks before whispering in her ear.

‘I’m letting you off tonight Khushi Kumari Gupta, but you should understand this is only a brief respite. I’m going to hear you say those three words to me very soon. And that’s a promise, not an empty threat.’

Khushi opened her mouth in shock determined to answer back as he walked around towards the driver’s side but when they pulled up outside her house half an hour later, Khushi was still lost for words. She muttered a sulky goodbye and stepped out of the car, only for a smile to emerge at the last minute as she remembered that Arnav had confessed his love to her. Khushi quickly opened the door again and hopped back into the car where Arnav raised his eyebrows at her in question, wondering if she’d forgotten anything.

Before he had a chance to ask Khushi why she’d come back she kissed him square on the mouth and leapt back out of the car all before Arnav got over the shock of her kissing him right in her neighbourhood where anyone could have seen. ‘Wow,’ he exclaimed to himself as he started the car again. ‘One second she’s angry and the next she kisses me like that? It’s official. I’ve fallen in love with a crazy woman.’
