FF: 30 Days - Day 23

Day 23

Khushi felt like she was on fire. Arnav had missed no opportunity during the wedding to touch her, kiss her or tease her and as she approached their room on trembling legs, the butterflies inside her stomach having worked themselves up into a frenzy. She felt almost as nervous and anxious as the sister she had just spent the last hour reassuring about the night ahead.

She opened the door and the butterflies stopped all movement and disappeard instantly. She’d expected a surprise, something completely unexpected and original but instead the sight that greeted her was a familiar one. Arnav was lying in bed, dressed in pyjamas, legs crossed, and pillows propped up behind him as he read a book. He looked up and shot her a smile before looking back down at his book.

‘Erm... Arnav?’

‘Hmmm?’

‘Arnav, aren’t we... I mean, I thought that we...’

He put his book down, still open next to him on the bed at her hesitant tone and gestured with his head for her to continue.

Khushi approached the bed slightly confused and sat down on the edge. Every touch, every kiss today had hinted at more, promised a night full of passion and yet here he was casually reading a book!? ‘I mean after yesterday I thought we were going to...’

He raised his eyebrows and waited but she didn’t continue. ‘Ohhh,’ he said as if just realising what she meant and controlled his smirk ‘but Khushi, you said I didn’t win so that means we can’t right?’ He shrugged his shoulders and picked his book up again only to have her snatch it back out of his hands.

‘Arnavvv!’

‘Khushiiiii.’

‘Don’t be stubborn, we said until Jiji and Jeejaji’s wedding so it’s over now. Come on.’ She got onto her side of the bed and sat up on her knees.

‘Oh no, no Khushi. You said a month. A month is usually 30 days. Occasionally 31 and 28 in February. Well actually it had 29 this year didn’t it because of the leap year?’

‘Arnav!’

‘What?’

Arnav folded his arms and looked at her sternly. '30 days means 30 days Khushi.' He was having too much fun teasing her and he could see her growing frustration as she shook his arm.

Khushi pouted in annoyance. Why did her husband have to be so stubborn? He could never let her win could he? She contemplated ignoring him and just going to sleep but she’d spent all yesterday and today in anticipation of this moment that her pride would have to take a temporary hiatus although she planned to get him back in the morning. She sighed in defeat and folded her own arms. ‘Okay fine, you win! Now can we... please?’

Arnav raised one eyebrow and unfolded his arms. ‘I’m sorry Khushi, what did you say?’

‘Arnav!’

‘Yes Khushi!’

‘Arnav! I said you win! Happy now?’

Arnav grinned and nodded his head, ‘ecstatic!’ He controlled the overwhelming desire to take her into his arms and finally end almost a month of torture and put his book onto the bedside table and lay down on his side facing away from her.

Khushi watched bewildered as he settled down and covered himself with the blanket. She reached out a hand and shook his shoulder, ‘Arnav?’

‘Hmmm?’

‘Arnav, what are you doing?’

Arnav feigned a sleepy voice and mumbled back, ‘Not today Khushi. I’m tired. You were right, weddings are hard work.’

‘But... but!’

Arnav grinned to himself fifteen minutes later as she finally stopped trying to wake him up and he heard her mutter profanities towards him under her breath as she took out her clothes and went to the bathroom. 

‘You’re the one that wanted something special sweetheart.’ Arnav turned over and closed his eyes for real this time, knowing that if he was still awake when she came out he’d lose all willpower.
