Chapter 3

Khushi walked towards the entrance doors. She hadn't been able to sleep all night. Even sitting outside in the breeze didn't manage to calm her. All night she'd been thinking about what she was going to say to Lavanya but as soon as she stepped through the doors she was taken back to the last time she'd been here.

Arnav breaking the door, Arnav on top of her and Arnav and his aftershave. There was nothing sweet or floral in the scent, it was all strong and masculine and heady. 'No Khushi, you're not here to see him or think about him. Today you're just going to talk to Lavanya and fix this mess you've made for yourself.' She spoke to herself as she ignored the curious looks of the staff and went towards Lavanya's office.

Arnav closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief. Was she really here or was he imagining things? Why would she come to the office, she hadn't been here in over a month. His breath caught as he watched her walk up the stairs towards his office. Had she come to see him? Why would she do that? Then he saw her stop outside Lavanya's office and walk in and he understood instantly.

Lavanya had been avoiding him all morning and while that made things slightly awkward for their projects he wasn't bothered in the least. He'd never really let Lavanya into his life, she was really just a colleague he occasionally hugged and kissed. That was all. It certainly wasn't thoughts of never seeing Lavanya again that had kept him up all night.

Khushi knocked and walked into the office to find Lavanya engrossed in work and nowhere near as depressed as she had been expecting.

'Khushi?'

'Lavanya, I came to ask if you...' She spoke as she started to close the door behind her but stopped when Lavanya lifted her hand to motion her to stop talking.

'No Khushi, I can't. I know why you're here but it's not going to work.' Lavanya stood up and walked around the desk towards Khushi.

'You've made me accept that I don't want to be with Arnav for a few months or a few years to be cast aside when he gets bored of me. I want someone who wants me in their life forever and isn't afraid to admit it. I want to thank you for that. You've made me open my eyes.' Lavanya looked so sincere but Khushi could see that there was sadness behind her resolution. She wasn't as unaffected by this as she claimed.

'Lavanya please try to understand, just forget everything I said...' Khushi couldn't finish her sentence as she felt a firm grip on her arm pulling her and all she could do was stumble behind in shock as he led her up the stairs to his office.

Arnav dragged her into the room and slammed the door shut behind them, still holding on to her arm. He pulled her towards him and almost growled at her, 'I told you to stop interfering in my life, I told you I never wanted to see you again so why are you here? Tell me, Khushi! What is it?' he held onto her other arm and leaned forward so their faces were only inches apart and he could see how wide her eyes had gone.  'You couldn't bear to not see me for even one day? Is that it?'

Khushi took a couple of deep breaths in to steady herself, 'Arnav, I only wanted to...' Khushi was stopped again midflow this time by the door opening and Lavanya walking in.

'ASR, leave her it's not her fault.'

Arnav looked away from Khushi and glared at Lavanya 'Don't you know how to knock Lavanya? You're not my girlfriend anymore, you can't just walk in wherever you want and you can't tell me what to do.' He looked back at Khushi angrily for a second before he let go of her arms and pushed her away from him. 'Just leave me alone, Khushi'

'Cancel all my meetings, I'm going home,' he barked at Lavanya before he stormed out

'Arnav, wait!' Khushi called to him but he didn't acknowledge her so she turned back into the office 'Lavanya, please look how upset he is by all this. Can't you just forget everything I said and go back to normal like you were before.'

'Khushi, I've already seen him this morning and he was fine then. He's more upset about you being here than he was about our break up. I don't bother him either way whether I'm there or not but at least you make him feel something.' Lavanya spoke softer than she normally did and left Khushi standing alone in Arnav's office.

'Oh God, I don't understand this man at all and now this Lavanya even refuses to listen to him. Help me, what should I do now?'
