Part 5

'But Anjaliji, I mean Di, Dhruv and I, we don't...'

'I know Khushiji, Dhruv has already told me he needs more time to get to know you first but I'm not worried about that. I know you'll love each other.'

'Di!' Arnav let out a strangled cry at the thought of Dhruv and Khushi getting to know each other. Akash was okay, Arnav had had no doubts that he would have stepped aside for Arnav but Dhruv was entirely different. Arnav himself had helped spoil Dhruv along with Anjali and Akash and always given him whatever he wanted.

'What is it Chote?'

'Di, I don't think Khushi and Dhruv...'

'Di!'

They all looked at the same time to see Dhruv running up the stairs. 'Di, Akash Bhai wants your help picking out a ring and I wanted to talk to Khushi, okay?' He didn't wait for a response but grabbed Khushi's arms and pulled her along the corridor into his room.

Arnav clenched his jaw and immediately began to follow when Anjali pulled on the arm she was still holding, 'Chote, let them speak. They must have a lot to discuss you know.'

'But Di! How can you just leave them alone in his room like that?' Arnav conveniently tried to ignore all the time he and Khushi spent in his room alone. That was different.

'What are you saying Chote? I have complete faith in Khushi.'

'It's not Khushi I'm worried about,' Arnav mumbled to himself as they walked down the stairs, his eyes still fixated on the door that Khushi had gone through.

---

As soon as the door was closed Khushi fidgeted with her scarf, 'Dhruv I need to tell you someth...'

'No look Khushi, first I have to apologise. I don't know how much Di has told you but I'm sorry I can't marry you. I already have a girlfriend.'

Khushi gasped in relief before she smiled, 'Oh thank god! I didn't know how I was going to tell Anjaliji I couldn't go through with this. Dhruv, that's such good news! But how come you never told anyone about your girlfriend and why did you tell Di you'd marry me?'

Dhruv's face fell slightly as he turned and sat down on the bed. Khushi hesitated for a second before going to sit next to him. She hadn't known Dhruv very long and although they were on friendly terms she didn't really know him well enough to be able to gauge his moods correctly.

'Wait. Khushi, did you agree to this wedding?'

'Erm... Not exactly.'

Dhruv looked at her confused, 'but what about you and Bhai?'

Khushi looked up in shock. Was it that obvious how she felt about Arnav? 'What? What do you mean?'

'I don't know, I just thought you guys always had something going on.'

'I... erm... no. I don't know what you mean. Anyway, he's told Anjaliji he wants her to find someone for him to marry anyway so...' Khushi trailed off as she thought about the grim possibility of having to go through another one of Arnav's engagements with that fake smile plastered to her face.

'What? Seriously? But he always... never mind. That's good for me anyway. Khushi I need you to just keep pretending you want to marry me until I sort things out with my girlfriend.'

Khushi instantly forgot Arnav in her excitement at having another couple to help. 'What do you mean? Is there a problem? Did you have a fight? Who is she? I can help! What happened?'

'Okay, okay Khushi. Calm down. Her name's Suhana, we went to College together and I have no idea what happened. She just sent me a text an hour ago saying she was breaking up with me.'

'What? But why? Okay when was the last time you spoke to her before then?'

'I spoke to her last night. I wanted to tell her that now Akash Bhai's wedding was arranged Di and Nani would start talking about my wedding so she should tell her parents about us.'

'Oh. Maybe she doesn't want to get married just yet?'

'No, but she did! She was excited about it last night. So I don't know what could have happened in one day and now she won't even answer my phone calls.'

'Hmm... well I know what we could do! You should write a letter to Suhana saying you'll kill yourself if she doesn't talk to you and then...'

'Kill myself? Khushi I don't think she'll believe that at all.'

'No Dhruv, trust me! It works! It worked for Jiji and Akashji and even for Arnavji and Lavanyaji.'

'What? Bhai wrote a suicide letter to Lavanya?'

'No, no, I wrote it,' Khushi saw Dhruv's eyebrows raise questioningly and corrected herself. 'I mean I wrote it on behalf of Lavanyaji and then Arnavji came to take her back. It always works.'

'I guess I'll... take your word on that but I'm going to try my own way first if that's okay?'

'This is so exciting! Am I the first person you've told?'

'Yes, so please don't tell anyone else until everything's sorted.'

'I'm so happy for you Dhruv!' Although she was unsure about whether she was happier that Dhruv was in love or that she wouldn't have to marry him after all.

---

Arnav finally managed to escape Di's clutches and raced back upstairs not bothering to knock and opened the door to see Khushi and Dhruv sitting on the bed hugging. 'What the f...? Khushi!'
