Chapter 4
Why had he thought coming home was such a good idea? There was Nani giving a lecture about marriage and Di pleading with him to at least compromise and try to understand Nani. It was like living the same day over and over again. He was barely listening
'Chote at least agree to Nani finding someone and then you can get to know her, after that it's your decision completely.' Anjali stood up and made to walk towards Arnav as she spoke before breaking off into a wide smile. 'Khushi? You're here?'
Arnav spun around to find Khushi smiling nervously at him, not listening to Anjali either. 'So are you following me now or something?' He turned back to Anjali, 'Di you lot do whatever you want. I'm going to my room.'
'Chote!' Anjali called after Arnav with a shocked look on her face.
'What's wrong?' Khushi asked Anjali and then Nani who had a similar look on her face.
'Arnav has finally agreed to marriage' Nani said with a smile.
'What?! He wants to marry Lavanya?' Khushi smiled but there was a small part of her that wasn't as happy as she probably should have been.
'No, he wants us to find him a wife that even I will approve of. I want you help Khushi and help us find someone exactly like you for Arnav,' Nani smiled at Khushi nodding her head.
Khushi briefly remembered the pink scarf landing on her head and what her mom always said but she shook herself. 'Oh God why am I thinking such scary thoughts? Me and that devil? He'll eat me alive.'
'No, No I can't do this. I can't interfere in his life again,' she spoke aloud already thinking of what Arnav's response would be if he knew what Nani wanted her to do.
Anjali interrupted her thoughts, 'No, he won't be angry, look he has finally agreed to a marriage of Nani's choice and I'm completely sure this is all because of you. Still Khushi, you should go ask Arnav what his preferences are. We don't want him to be upset and refuse again.'
Khushi nodded bleakly and allowed Anjali to push her towards Arnav's room. She shuffled along slowly, 'what is happening with my life God? What am I supposed to do now? I woke up thinking one thing and something else is happening completely. How can I find a girl for this Devil who one day lives with one girl and the next wants to marry someone completely different?'
She walked in to find him taking off his tie. He'd already abandoned his jacket and flung it onto the bed along with his waistcoat. Khushi had to make her presence known before he did something like take his shirt off as well. The image of his burnt neck and the strange desire she'd had to caress it flashed in her mind as she coughed rather obviously.
Arnav closed his eyes and cursed himself. When would he learn to lock that damn door. He knew it would be her without even having to turn around. He walked around Khushi and slammed the door shut without looking at her. Maybe now he wouldn't have to deal with people just walking in whenever without even knocking.
'Oh God, why has he closed this door, now I don't even have an easy escape from him,' Khushi spoke to herself and looked around the room nervously.
'Did you come here to say something or did you just come to mutter to yourself?' Arnav avoided looking at Khushi and began to put his jacket away.
Something happened to him whenever he looked at Khushi as if he couldn't control himself. This lack of control usually manifested itself into anger which was fine but it was when he couldn't string two words together that troubled him. He'd look into her eyes and completely forget what he had been about to say or even what he'd been angry about.
'I... I... Anjali and Nani said I have to ask you...erm... What kind of girl do you like?'
'What?' Arnav stopped in front of his wardrobe with his jacket still in his hand. 'Are you really crazy or do you just say these random things to make me crazy?'
'No, no Nani said you've agreed to get married and now I have to find a girl for you, just like me.' Khushi rushed through her sentence, tripping over her words
'What the? When did I agree to get married?' Arnav threw his jacket back on the bed and began to walk towards her, 'and to someone like you? You really have gone crazy haven't you?'
'But...but...downstairs...You said you agree to what Anjali wants.' Khushi walked backwards towards the door.
Arnav pushed a hand through his hair 'I didn't mean that,' he came even closer to Khushi and grabbed her arm to stop her just as she would have hit the door. 'What are you doing? I'm not going to attack you!'
Khushi avoided his gaze and found herself staring at his collar where she could just about see his still healing burn mark. 'I just...came to ask you what kind of girl you want. Then I have to go.'
Arnav raised his free hand and saw her visibly flinch but he continued and held her chin up so her face was only a few inches from his.
